Pécs University, Hungary
The Washington College in Hungary program is a tuition and room exchange program based at Pécs University in Pécs. Pécs is the fifth largest town in Hungary with a population of 180,000. It is situated in the south of the region called Transdanubia and bordered by Croatia. The proximity of the Adriatic Sea makes the climate of the town pleasant, almost Mediterranean. Pécs is famous for its museums, galleries, and the cultural events it hosts.
Pécs University is the largest institution of higher learning located in Pécs with an enrollment of approximately 4,000 students. The University has undergone many changes since its official establishment as the Academy of Pécs in 1833. Pécs University's wide variety of disciplines make it a very unique Hungarian university.
Faculty
An increasing number of courses at Pécs University are taught in English. The staff at Pécs University includes a professional team of academics that are able to offer various courses in English for non-Hungarian students. Exchange student advising will be done by the International Programs Center.
Requirements
All well-qualified sophomores and juniors are eligible to apply for the exchange program with Pécs University. This program is open to students in all majors. Students should meet the following prerequisites:
- GPA of 3.0 or above.
- Strong academic record.
- Evidence of good character, maturity, and motivation.
- Ability and willingness to adapt to a foreign environment.
The cost of international travel between the United States and Hungary, meals, books, local transportation while in Hungary, health insurance, and personal expenses are the responsibility of the student applicant unless other arrangements have been made.
Students should make an appointment to speak to the Director of Student Financial Aid to discuss the financial aspects of the program they plan to attend.
Living Arrangements
Housing is available not far from campus in Pécs University Halls of Residence situated in various parts of the town. Most of the larger halls were built in the 1970s and 1980s; they have study-bedrooms for three or four students, libraries, studios and computer rooms with access to the Internet.
Curriculum
Pécs University is organized into seven faculties: Law, Humanities, Business and Economics, Fine and Performing Arts, Engineering, Education, and Sciences. Students will be able to take courses in the following disciplines: Criminology, Politics, Sociology, Philosophy, Foreign Languages, History, Business Management, Economics, Art, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and Education.
